Background

Marco Rubio was born in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Florida in 1993 and a law degree from the University of Miami in 1996. After law school he worked as a city commissioner in West Miami before entering state politics.

Rubio won election to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000. He rose quickly, serving as majority leader and then Speaker from 2006 to 2008. During his speakership he focused on tax cuts, education reform, and immigration policy.

In 2010 Rubio defeated incumbent Charlie Crist and Kendrick Meek to win the U.S. Senate seat from Florida. He took office in January 2011 and joined the Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees, establishing a profile on national security and Latin America issues.

Rubio ran for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination but suspended his campaign in March 2016. He endorsed Donald Trump later that year and won reelection to the Senate in 2016 and again in 2022.

As a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Rubio participated in oversight of U.S. intelligence agencies. He served as acting chair in 2020–2021 during a transition and then as vice chair until 2025, handling matters including foreign threats and classified briefings.

During his Senate tenure Rubio received briefings on unidentified aerial phenomena from military and intelligence personnel. He publicly referenced reports of objects operating in restricted airspace, including over nuclear facilities, that government officials said did not match known U.S. technology.

In an interview later featured in the 2025 documentary The Age of Disclosure, Rubio stated there had been repeated instances of something operating over restricted nuclear facilities that was not American. He later clarified on Fox News that he was describing allegations reported to him by others rather than personal firsthand knowledge.

Rubio left the Senate in January 2025 upon confirmation as Secretary of State. In that role he has continued to comment on national security topics, including unidentified objects in restricted airspace, while emphasizing the need for investigation without attributing them to extraterrestrial sources.

Where They Are Now

As of October 2025 Marco Rubio serves as the 72nd U.S. Secretary of State under President Donald Trump. He conducts foreign policy travel and statements on national security matters including UAP reports.

Rubio has defended his earlier remarks as summaries of information provided by others and continues official duties focused on diplomacy and security.
